I have seen references to gel super glue, is this the same thing as you would buy at a hardware store or is it something for aquariums? wouldn't the chemicals in super glue harm the corals, or degrade the water?

The super glue you buy in a store and the fancy stuff they sell for corals is the same. Do not let anyone tell you any different. The main ingredient in all varieties of this material is
ETHYL CYANOACRYLATE. Just go to Walmart or Home Depot and pick some up. I use this to mount frags exclusively. If I have larger pieces or pieces on rocks a bit larger I have used the epoxy they sell in the hobby. Super Glue Gel is used because regular super glue is too runny and will run down the coral. The gel consistency allow plenty of time to position and allow it to cure without running. It will not degrade your water and reefers worldwide use it with no ill effects.

I went to the stores in my area and bought all the different types and brands of superglue to test them out. The stuff that worked the best for me was purchased at WalMart $1.97 for the 2 tube pkg. It is Scotch brand gel superglue. I get 8-12 frags mounted from each tube. That's about ten cents a frag.

thanks fo the info kevin... I'll try the scotch brand out first
I used to use the Ross brand of super glue gel but found it too runny and was a mess to work with if making more than a few frags. I forget where I heard about this brand but I have found Loc-Tite {Lowe's or HD}to be so thick there is absolutely no time needed for sealing or bonding. You can literally put a spot of glue gel on the rock rubble or whatever you are going to use, stick the frag in it and immediately place the frag into the tank. I have done as many as 12 frags from a single tube and not have frags come loose. HTH..

I use Jurassic gel from www.uncommonconglomerates.com (http://www.uncommonconglomerates.com) it's under the fossil section. It runs $34-40 for a huge tube but it will last you forever If your cap happens to stick you can always use a coat hanger to poke a new hole in it.

I have used ZAP gel. I get it at a hobby store. As long as it is a gel type of glue I think you are gonna be alright.

I gotta agree with the Loc-Tite brand, the gel is thick, cures quickly and comes in a neat container that does not drip, or leak. Wal Mart here carries it, under $3.00.
