eclipse system and protein filter

I received a 29 gal. Eclipse deluxe system as a present. I would like to have eventually a couple of clowns and some live rock. Do I need a protein skimmer? If so, what fits? The rock has been in the tank for about a week. I'm in no hurry..how long woould you suggest to wait before adding fish.

I would test the water levels but it would usually take another month till you can add the clowns.
