Does anyone out there know of an option to placing powerheads in the tank for water circulation? I've heard little about a closed loop setup but can't find anything on it or how to set it up. I would appreciate any suggestions. I'm tired of the constant headaches, noise and esthetics of four 802 powerheads.

Thanks!!

A closed loop is either constructed by drilling a tank in the back and placing a pump from the inlet and then creating outlets or you can submerge a pipe and connect it over the back of the tank and make that your inlet. Then construct the outlet like you want with outlets where you want. Then you will need to drill tap a hole in the inlet and place a tap screw that can be opened and screwed on top. Fill water all the way up until the air bleeds out. Then close the screw and plug in the pump. I hope that makes sense.

I also ran 4 Hagen 800 powerheads on my 225. I replaced them with a pair of closed loops. One was run by a Mak 4 and the other by a 3MD.

I have since shut down the closed loops and now run a pair of Tunze 6080 stream pumps. Moves some kind of water, quiet and low power consumption. The one drawback, is they are in the tank, but does not bother me, nor the fish.

Doug, did you have problems with the closed loop?
I notice a lot of people go to a closed loop and then
go back to pumps in the tank.

Thanks,
Rob

No, not at all Rob. They ran fine. I just like gadgets. http://www.reeftalk.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif So I just had to try the Tunze pumps. I was so amazed by the water movement, I bought another. The amount moved is large, yet gentle. Also 36 watts compared to 200 watts.

My goal is to eliminate the large pumps, except for the Mak 4 that runs my beckett skimmer. It will soon be running from the overflow, sitting on a shelf, after the sump is eliminated. {bonus of a behind the wall tank, http://www.reeftalk.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif}.

I found the two closed loops, mover no more water than my Hagen 800 powerheads. I sometimes wondered how good that was. Guess it depends on what someone wants in their tank. If keeping the tank cool is a problem, then closed loops are a good option.
