I have never had an acrylic tank so I dont know too much about them. I am in the process of trading my 180 gal AGA tank for a 300 gal acrylic tank. My question is if an acrylic tank leaks is it something that is impossible to fix? And if you fix it, is it likely to leak again? I am asking this because the person I am getting the tank from said it had a leak a while back but he fixed it with Weldon and it has not leaked now for a few months. Should I be worried about this? What would you do?

Thanks.....

Actaully I do believe that acrylic tanks are a lot easier fis a leak than a glass tank. If he did it right with weldon I would not be to worried about but wuld keep on eye on it just in case. Leaks on acrylic usally will not be bad and will only be drip which as long as you can locate where the leak is weldon should be able to fix it.
Like is said not an expert just my opion. I have not had to fix a leak before but have used weldon to cover a 2" with a piece of acrylic for a old bulk head and never had a problem with it leaking after patching the hole.

It is unlikely that it will leak from the spot that was repaired. Acrylic is not glued together but is bonded by using solvent. The solvent melts the acrylic and then evaporates and the acrylic bonds to itself forming a very strong joint (as strong as the acrylic itself.

Cool ....So it sounds like it should be OK. Even if I have a problem it looks like it could be fixed. Is there something I can do to the tank before I fill it? Like seal the joints with something?
Thanks.

You shouldn't have to do anything if the tank is currently filled with water and is working fine now. If it has been empty for a while you could fill it in the garage or outside and let it sit overnight and then check for leaks (just for peace of mind).

Kevin
