Hello,
I am in the process of setting up a 55 gal reef tank (48x13x21). I want to set up a sump/plumbing but don't know where to start. Do I need to get an overflow box or would it be possible just to use a pump to run water to the sump?
Also how many gph would be required for the return pump? For lighting, I am planning on getting a 4x96W PC lighting. Would this be sufficient or should I consider metal halide? Thanks for your help!

If the tank is not pre-drilled you will need to place an overflow on it. Using a pump would not be advisable as it is hard to match return and overflow ratio's which is regulated by using an overflow. A good measure of GPH to consider is somewhere like 10-15x your water volume. I would say any pump in the 600-800GPH at 4 foot of head will supply most current needs. Your lighting is a question of more importantly what type of corals you intend to keep. However with 4x96watt PC you can keep a good mixture of Soft,LPS and lower light SPS corals. If you intend to consider keeping HIGH LIGHT SPS than you may want to consider Halides. I have a 55 lit by 4x110watt VHO but then I prefer them over PC's. I have three other smaller tanks tanks lit by PC as size limits all other lighting means. Now my 120 is lit by Halides and I love that system the best.

Thanks for your reply! I plan to keep a mixture of coral types. One question pops to mind. What are the advantages of VHO over PC lighting, and why would it be preferred? Also does anyone know where I can get an inexpensive replacement ballast for a 55W PC bulb? I bought a 24" 2x55W PC light fixture for my 20 gal tank about a year ago and one of the ballasts has already failed.
