Hi everyone...I have a far out question...I am a facilities coordinator at a private school and I was thinking of setting up a reef tank in the science building on campus...I was also thinking if anyone knows of any organizations that maybe give out grants or funds to educational organizations to assist in this...I can alway see if they could put some money in the budget for this but it would be way cool if grants were available from someone. As it stands now I believe the biology class does brush on the topics of oceans, symbiotic relationships etc so since this could also be used for teaching, and students may be able to assist is some of the maintenace it would be a learning experience also i.e. the educational part of it..any direction to the appropriate organization, or any leads would be great...I live in Middletown, Rhode Island by the way
Thanks

Our High school set up a reef tank two years ago, I know that the school had to set aside money from the budget for this. And I know that the tank, stand, canopy and all the equipment , along with the live stock was bought through a company in south carolina I believe. They had no help with financing, but the place they got there stuff from gave them a break on the prices. I was a part of helping to set up the tank, and I wasn't a very happy camper over the tank they were given, the equipment wasn't that good, and most of the animals came DOA. To say the least, the tank struggled for the first year, They didn't have much success and then a janitor broke the tank accidentally over the summertime. They didn't try again. If I was you, I would think on the lines of a nano system. Just get a small 10/ 15 gallon tank. something that can be broken down and taken home for the summer vacation.Or ask local LFS's for donations to stock it. They can be returned in the summer time, and the tank left at school with the smallest amount of maintianence.

Katspaw,
I sort of know what you are saying...this is a boarding school and even though the kids go home during the summer we have summer school, and alot of summer camps so the buildings are used all year...I have a nice place already picked out...it would be an in the wall tank, the other side of the wall in a janitor's closet that is not in use anymore so there is a mop sink in there, so water and a drain already there...the LFS which I used to work there will more than likely give me a break on at least the tank but he never wanted to get into to much reef stuff before so he is not setup to get the good stuff...if it comes down to it I will submit sometime for the budget, but it would have been nice to get some financial help from someplace..either way I am still going to try and go forward with this project as I believe it would be a very nice addition to the school community...so I will see?? and then again maybe it will not work out..thanks for the reply
