Hi all,
I am a newbie and would like to set up a 90 – 100 gal salt water show tank, fish only, in my living room. My questions concern the fact that I want all my filtration gear (sump, skimmer etc) in my basement. They will be located 10 ft below and 10 ft laterally from the tank. I also plan to have a 40 gal tub for water changes in the basement. I want to pump water changes up to the aquarium, no buckets in my living room for me! I plan to have a plumber install any necessary drains and water hookups. I want this to be an ideal setup.
My questions are;
What size pump and fittings will I need to get the water back up to the aquarium from the sump and for water changes?
What diameter pvc should I have between the aquarium and sump?
How should I plumb the 40 gal container to get new water into my aquarium for water changes?
What is the best way to drain water out of the aquarium when I do the changes?
Thanks

For a fish only it is alot easier in recommendation. I use a DANNER MAG DRIVE 18 to pump 10 feet high. I think a DANNER MAG 24 should pump what you need but you may want more flow from that head so probally the best pump reccommendation would be a Dolphin AmpMaster 3000 with 1.5 inch PVC Line. Whether you run it unrestricted to the tank without a ball valve will require whether you have a built-in overflow or a hang on. Drain line size can match the flow line size.

Thanks for your reply. i plan on getting a built in overflow setup. Why would i need a ball valve?

The built in overflows can handle a bit more flow than the over the side. I would just make sure your outlet on the internal overflow is big enough to handle the volume. However a Ball valve is no big deal and install one anyway incase you want to tone down the flow in case it is too much.
