I need some advice on how to raise the roof of my tank canopy a few more inches. I'm planning to buy a MH/VHO retrofit and I want to get it as far from the water as I can. It is a tall, wooden canopy with slots that fit over the edges of the tank in front. It is now about 8" from the water. I need to get it to about 12".
Any suggestions?

Would have to see a picture of it to tell you how to do it for sure. I built a wood light box for my last tank, which I hang from studs in the ceiling with black chain. Could use rope if you wanted.
Your other option rather than hanging the lid would be to add onto it or make a whole new outside edge. Probably allot more work where hanging the whole thing is quick and easy.

You could put legs on it.

I also have a wooden canopy outfitted with 3 x 175 watt MH bulbs, 2 x 96 watt compact fluorescents and 3 x 40 watt fluorescents. They all sit between 2-3 inches above the water surface, separated only by the acrylic covers, all collectively pulling 7.2 amps of electricity. Nothing in the tank has ever been burnt, water replacement is about 2 litres every 3 days.

As you go higher from the water surface, less light reaches the tank bottom. 12" seem a bit much.

12" does seem a lot, I have mine up just enough to get my arms in the tank without moving the lights.
