I set up a new 135gal salt system the night before Thanksgiving. All of my numbers are good. One question, how long does it take for my water to clear up? It's still foggy.

Thanks for the help,

How did you set it up what type of substrate? Are you using a skimmer?

It takes a few days if you used a very small substrate also alot of organics in the water column can cloud the water. I would say first wait a few more days and remember it takes a few weeks to cycle a tank before you add anything.

I completely dissolved the salt in the tank with a power head and nothing but water. Once it was all dissolved and all my numbers were good, I added live sand for a substrate. It's looking better today. I added some activated carbon and some filter floss yesterday.

Thanks for the responce Master Omeg!

What does it mean to cycle a tank?

To cycle a tank means to allow the tank enough time for any material to decay off of whatever matter be it fresh live rock fish waste and allow the process of ammonia to convert to nitrites and then to nitrate and then to nitrogen gas which escapes into the atmosphere.

The different bacteria populations that convert these wastes needs time to stabilize and convert any levels to 0. You do not want to stock any tank that is not out of balance or harmony with its own bacterial populations as you can pollute the water as the bacteria will not be able to keep up.

I would consider getting a good book to read up on so you can have a better idea on what some of the things are that will be going on in your tank over the next year as you move forward on the setup and some thing that you can refer to also.
