I just set up an EV 180 w/ a mag 7 ,2 days ago. The problem I had was the pump was too strong, filled the bottom chamber even though the gate valve was opened all the way. I put a 3/4" ball valve on it to bring the water level down to 1/2" below the inner platform could this damage the pump? If so what other alternatives do I have? And how long befor I see some foam. Thanks 4 the help!

It took about 2 weeks for my 180 to get good and broke in to a consist foam then spent a few more weeks till it was totally setteled in. It will probably be a week before you really start to see anything. Just keep the ball valve wide open and let it run it will settle in and you can remove the ball valve it will be fine.
Oh one thing I keep my skimmer water where the skimmer water level outside the skimmer is just below the out put valve.

Thanks for the reply Tendar. I was a little confused about your last comment on where you keep your water level.Did you mean water level inside skimmer, just below the gate valve, or sump water level just below the gate valve? Or both inside/outside? Thanks Ill open the b valve all the way and wait it out! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now see depending on what type of pump you use will depend on whether you need the ball valve or not. I use a Iwaki 30 on a EV-150 and I use a ball and the gate valve. Of course I am overdriving the skimmer pushing it to the max.
All depends on application. My Aqua-C is used outside the sump and sits about 2 feet above the ground and gravity feeds back into the sump.

The water level in the sump is just below the gate valve. Here is a pic of mine running with a mag7 like yours. I acutally need to clean it today since it just finally started working agian this week. I had in a closet for a month dry so it took almost 3 weeks for it to start working right again.

I opened the ball valve all the way up when I got home last nite. And within 15 min. the cup had foam /green water in it! i draind the cup and lost the foam in the tower.I'm guesssing thats normal. Great pic! now I see exactly where to keep the sump water. And that'll probably solve the micro bubbles I've got in the main tank /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
THANKS again!

Glad to help
Yes the foam will fall back down some when you take off the top but will start back up again. My skimmer also stops foaming for about a 1 hour after feedings then startup again on its own
