Well it looks like I will finally get my new skimmer this year!! After trying all last year to get one it looks like everything is just right to allow me to afford a new one, question is which size I have a 75g 20g sump about #120 of live rock and a 2" bed. Is a EV180 ok or should I just get the EV120. I plan "some day" to get a 180g but I want the skimmer to work well with my 75 setup untill I can get the 180 which may very well be years down the road Also this is the pump selection they have which one will work the best? this is for the EV180
w/Rio 3100:$384.95
w/Mag 7:$389.95
w/DP-800:$399.95
This is from marine Depot, they seem to have the lowest price on the aqua-c, Do you guys know anyone that sells them for less?

An EV180 will serve you well.

which pump should I use? I've had a few rio's they seem to give off alot of heat and wear out fast, I was thinking about the mag drive 7 but have never had one to know if they run hot or are built very well.

Mag 12 with a ball valve /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I tend to overdrive my Aqua-C however if your going to have the pump right there with the skimmer in the sump a mag7 will do fine. I have my skimmer above the sump.

so the mag drives can run in or out of the water? if you run them in the water do they transfer much heat?

Yes they can run both in and out. I by nature try to run all my pumps out of water. Any pump that is submersible will transfer heat and yes the Mags do transfer heat.

I have a EV180 and love it. It is run off a Mag7 and does transfer soem heat to the tank but not the much. I would say 1-2 degrees increase in temp.

so in theory I could run this with little to no heat increase, I run the tank at 78 and in the 95+ days of summer it hits 80-81 tops

You might see a 1-2 degree increase as Tendar meantioned. The heat transfered by a pump is nothing compared to the heat transfered by lighting.

I would love to run the pump externally but I don't quite have the room for it, but if the temp gets too high I'll figure out a way to get it outside the sump. I guess I'll have to do a major rearrange

You to really see how much heat a pump can transfer try running a larger pump in a vat of makeup water and see how hot the water gets /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ya I know what your saying, I use a rio 3100 in a 25 gal container to mix up my water changes. I had to put it on a timer so it doesn't get too warm otherwise it gets up to 93-94 degrees

Exactly. One never realized how much heat it can transfer though it is dissipated with the more water volume there is.

I see they say mag drives are for "in sump" use only , how long have you been running yours out of the water?

Yeah I would go directly to the Danner Manufacturing site. But as I said I have ran mine 4 years externally just fine.

I have given thought to trying externally but looking at it didnt not give me the confidence to run one extrernal but hey 4 years maybe I will give one a try. What size are you running externally?

Does the pump feel hot to the touch, that maybe I should put a small fan pointed at it when I set this up?
