how to use a skimmer

I read about two methods on the use od protein skimmers. One is running it continuosly and replacing the essential trace elements periodically, or run the protein skimmer intermittently; run it for 2-3 days then let it rest for another few days. What method do you prefer?

I run my skimmer 24/7 and the majority of people do. There are some that prefer the other method though.

Usually when you run a skimmer it can take a few days to a week to break in. I never saw the point in cycling it as the benefits of oxgenating the water and removing organics far outweight any stripping of elements which by method are replaced by water changes and occasional suppliment use.

I have always run mine 24/7. I did run one 37 gal tank skimmerless and had great success with it though.

Running it 24/7 sounded better to me too.

My next step is purchasing lighting equipment and holy they are expensive... looks like the most expensive part of the aquarium

Yeah lights are probably about the most expensive piece of equipment but probably the most important also. Well except for the tank of course being the most important I guess
