I have not bought into the moonlight stuff yet. I figure as along as there is a little light some where in the room that gives to the tank then it is probably enough. It is pretty dark out side when there are no light on anywhere and only about 1 week a mounth that the moon really lights it up out side but when you under water you loose most of that light. I am not so sure that moon light effects corals as much as the tides the moon makes.

I added two moonlights to my 55g alpha and have not seen any adverse/or positive affects. The best I can say is "I like the way it looks" and even adjusted my lighting schedule so the main lights turn off earlier. Thus allowing more enjoyment with just moonlights. I cannot make any comparisons of brands, I bought what I saw in the LFS.

I friend of mine uses rope lights for his moon lights and you get them for around $10 or so and work great and will cover any size tank.

Just happened to view this thread. On the rope lights - just a blue one around the edge of the canopy? That would be a neat idea. Is it too bright though? I have a deep tank though. The light shouldn't be to bright near the bottom so would this be a good option for me? How does it look?

Yes my friend has the blue one and it is on a 240 gall tank of his but it is 24" deep and lights it nicely. NOt to bright either. His tank is acrylic so he pretty much just has it sitting on top of the tank across the back but mountiung along the back of the hood would be better.
As cheap as they are it is worth a try but I think it would work for you.

I heard of people running there actinic light for a long period of time. It will help your corline grow. I know it affectes your corals but in what way I better not say. I'm not to sure on that.
But moon lights are more for your viewing plessure. Your actinic lights takes care of the needs that the moon provides.
If your going to do your how moon lights just watch out for some of the lighting being on the wrong light spectrum.
Just my thoughts

Ture Moon Beam is 470 Nanometer. I know of 3 makers
#1 is Mark Weiss "MoonShine" comes in 1 or 2 lights self contained. #2 is Bright Light Technology "MoonBeam". #3 I think is Voc Tech, I'll look it up tomorrow. Thes lights run for around $49.95 to $79.95 for 1 light and $129 for the Mark Weiss double light. Or you can go on eBay and a firm there sells 10 to 5000 Blue LED lights. He had 50 for $1.99 and a 100 for $2.99 plus $5 shipping. Thats better than radio shacks $2.99 each. This guys are 465 nan at 3.5 volts, 470nan at 3.7 volts and 480nan at 4 volts. Hook the 4 in line to a small bimmer switch and plug that into a 12 volt transformer from radio shack and you have a dimable True moon light for around $25

I'm using a Current Orbit Light Fixture w/ Lunar Light. The price is pretty good as the moonlight feature seems to be (virtually) free compared with other systems.
I'm not certain if it will help the life in the tank but it looks great in the evening. The lunar lights give that great "shimmer" effect.
Here's the specs:
(2) 65 watt Dual Daylight (10000K and 6700K), Dual Actinic (460nm and 420nm) and (2) Lunar light together in one sleek, quiet fan cooled fixture. Includes mounting legs. 30.75" x 9" x 5". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I got one for around $177. Try not to pay much more than that for a similar setup.
