View Full Version : RETRO FITTING LIGHTS
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO TAKE THE STOCK LIGHT ASY AND CONVERT IT SO YOU CAN USE STRONGER BULBS FOR CORALS AND IS IT WORTH DOING VS JUST BUYING NEW LIGHTS ,I HAVE AN ALL FISH TANK, JUST WANT TO ADD A FEW SIMPLE BEGINNER CORALS LIKE MUSHROOM, THE LIGHTS I HAVE NOW CAME WITH 40W BULBS

would be easier to just get a new lights and dont know if it would be any cheaper either.
THANKS, DO YOU KNOW WHICH LITES TO USE, I'M BEING TOLD BY SOME FRIENDS THAT FOR FEATHER DUSTERS OR MUSROOMS YOU CAN GET BY BY ADDING A BLUE AND A WHITE 10K BULB BUT I DONT THINK THAT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE STANDARD LIGHT SET THAT COMES WITH TANK PLUS MY LIGHT IS NOT ONE LIGHT ITS TWO LIGHTS THAT SIT SIDE BY SIDE ON A 55 GAL TANK, IN OTHER WORDS ONE LIGHT COVERS HALF THE TANK, THE OTHER LIGHT HANDLES THE OTHER HALF

Feather duster are just worms so no lights is actually needed for them but mushrooms and such need stronger lighting than what you have. Your best bet is either Power Compacts or VHO lighting. For a 55 a pair of 96 watt Power compacts would work well.

Here is an option: Home Depot has the Lights of America 6500K outdoor fixtures for 30.00 each, that comes with a 65W PC bulb. I've heard that reef people have used them. I'm going to add some to my canopy but because that is a more yellow light I will have some seperate actinic bulbs as well. That is just an option if you're looking for an inexpensive way to add light. May wan't to look into it.
Thanks for the info everyone

I have used those before for sumps and they work well and your right you will want to add some actinics. A friend of mine was using for his reef for a while and the tank did great.
