I recently bought a 70 gallon tall glass aquarium with a built in overflow box and still in the process of building it. I am using a 25 gallon glass aquarium for my sump. I need help choosing a pump for the return line to the main tank. Most of the pumps that I have seen people use are the external pumps. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a Mag 9.5 for my soon to be set up 65g reef. Mags can be used in or out of the sump. However, some people say that the Mags might leak after a while outside of the sump. It's quiet and powerful and would be a good choice for a 70g.

I've heard also that Mag pumps really heat the water when submerged in the sump. What do you experts think is the best submersible pump that you have you used?. And which one do you think would be ideal for a 70 gallon tank?. Thanks

I use Mag's for my return pumps and they dont heat up the water to much maybe a degree in my tanks. The pump size will depend on how much head you will have and how big of a drain hole you have. A 1" drain will only drain 600 gph max.

Hey tendar, how do you determine how much head? Is it the distance the sump is to the main tank? The drain hole to the sump is about 2 and a half inches.

Head is determined by how high the water has to be pumped upwards plus and bends in the pipeing along the way and the thickness of feed lines. It is a long drawn out calculation. Best is to go by 1 foot of a head for every foot you have to push water up to the tank from sump plus 1/2 a foot of head for every 90 degree it has turn to get ot the tank. Usally most are pushing 5-6 feet head unless there is a lot of plumbing going on. Your pump should say what its water flow is for certian head presures. Marinedepot has a good flow chart for Mag's to give a idea on how much flow you expect with the head you will have.

Does anyone have a model 6000 Quiet One pump? If so, tell me about your experience with it. Thanks

If your talking about the new quiet one pumps which I believe you are from what I have heard they are not near as good as thier old ones. Are you looking for a external or internal pump. Supreme Mag drive pumps are pretty good.

I am looking for an internal pump. I guess I will try out the Supreme Mag drive pump you are talking about. I have read a lot of good reviews about it. Thanks for your help.
