I am new to the wet/dry filter world, and I recently set up a 75 gallon tank with a wet/dry filter. I am concerned that it might be possible for the overflow to pull in more water than basin can hold.
Is this possible?
If so, what do people do to prevent it from happening?
Also, what happens if the the power goes out? Can that cause a flood?

Thanks for your help!

This depends on how you have your system designed.

If you have a checkvalve or air break in the return line at the overflow line so not no more water than the water in the tank to the overflow level can flow back then it will not overflow.

However this is provided the overflow is big enough for your system. Try turning off the pump and seeing where the water level comes up to in the wet/dry you may need to quickly turn it back on.

I hope you get the points I am making /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I just placed my sump return line high enough in the aquarium that when the power goes out it does'nt siphon back into the sump as much. I spose if you had the return line out of the water it would not siphon back at all, but thats just an idea i just thought of. any way thats how i do it with my 55 and a sump thats 1/3 full

I have your basic Aqua Clear wet/dry filter. It seems to me that once the water level went below the hose inlet into the basin, that the suction stopped. Is this true?
I'll have to try turning off the pump when I get home.

Thanks for all your help.

You should have the return line (or at least one of them) depending how you have it set up, very close to the surface of the water to agitate it and keep the surface film down to a minimum. If you do that it will naturally break the siphon with minimal back flow to the sump.
