VHO Light Shield

I am going to have 4 vho bulbs in a canopy about 3(+)? inches or so above the water. Do I need a glass top to prevent evaporation on the lights? or doesn't it really matter if water evaporates on the lights?

I always take off light shields my self. Thier main purpose to protect from spashing water which leads to salt build up. I just clean my bulbs once a month with a damp cloth to remove and salt build up. Water evap has no real affect on them that I know of.
