Hey all. I have kept my own reef since i was 18, which makes it almost 10 years now. Problem is I have moved several times. The last move was 11 mos ago and the tank was set back up, with some serious damage to the lighting system. Since at the time of the move I only kept the live rock and live sand, the tank has only had ambient room lighting for 11 mos, all filters, skimmers, heater, running. I just got new lighting, the tank tests fine, shockingly, the live rock still has some corraline algea growth on it. So heres the deal. I have been thinking about adding an additional 45lbs of figi LR to the tank, for mor scaping abilities. Can i use the tank to re-cure the rock if i purchase it as pre=cured? I only have LR in there now, but im not sure what major problems could happen. OF course im going to do a 1.035-1.041salinity dip first, damn pesky worms and mantis shrimp. any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, there is about 70-80bs of LR in there now, but it only covers abou half the tank, i want to build higher. Any thoughts, ideas, etc?

Go ahead and add new rock, as long as you can still get good circulation, the more rock you put in the better. You may get a mini tank cycle but if there’s nothing in the tank other than sand and rock it won’t matter. Put the rock in and check your levels in a week and then again in another week, if the second test is good do regular water change and go for it, if the second test shows high nitrite level then you got about 2 more weeks to go. Test again after that.

just make sure that you get "cured" rock if not your tank will spike. you will be able to tell if it is not cured by the nasty smell, trust me you will know it when you smell it.
