Would stocking a sump with Culerpa or an other macro, without sand and Liverock still be beneficial to the reef in reducing phosphate?

Yes it would KillBill, Try though adding some sand preferably live if possible maybe a cup or so from your main tank that seems to be well established on top of dead sand.It isn't necessary but it will increase your potential for nasty stuff removal and copepod production!

That’s funny, you can do it that way but you need to fashion a screen to keep "floaters" from getting sucked into the pump and keep your Culerpa tied together until it anchors itself to the sump.

You also need to watch that screen to make sure it isn’t getting plugged with culerpa, if conditions are just right in the tank it grows fast. You will need to do a lot of pruning

Cool thanks for talking to me.
I've since added 3"deep of live sand and one bunch of chaetomorpha and placed my charcoal bag on top of the algae.
The lighting is just a 18" 15watt flourescent. What do you think?

Sounds good but what type of bulb is it? Aquarium or just a regular fluorescent?

It's a regular but I purchased a 10K aquarium tube to replace it.
