Hi all,

I hope you don't mind me trying to explain this in writing, as my cruddy adsl/firewall doesn't want to let me post pics. So please bear with me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bow.gif

I am currently thinking about setting up another reef tank, and really want to try a nano reef.
However this is to go in the bedroom, and I want to try to do it as "low tech" as possible with live rock, live sand, and a refugium.
And if possible I would like to have it all as one tank, in the centre of the room, and be able to see every side, the lights will be suspended from the ceiling.

However my knowledge of water dynamics is absolutely nil and was wondering if the plan I have will work at all.

I want a tank 40cm x 40cm x 65cm. On the longest side I would put a divider creating a 40cm cube main tank, and a 25cm x 40cm x40cm "refugium".

This "fuge" section would be split with a baffle, lets say, 15cm from the right hand side with approx a 5cm gap to the bottom. 5cm to the left of this baffle there would be a low baffle only 10cm high behind which (filling the left side) a sand bed would be. In this main fuge section I would have various algaes, and a couple of bits of LR.
I was thinking about filling the gap between the baffles with egg crate, and putting a pile of LR rubble over it to get some flow through it, and hopefully get some pods going.

The water would enter the fuge via a small pump in an egg crate box on the far right of the main tank & return via a 10cm x 10cm hole on the far left of the main divider.

All the measurements in this post have been guessed as I have no idea how big the return hole should be, or even what sort of lph I will need.

I fully expect this plan to be too good to be true, so please point out the errors, and if you know of any, the solutions.

Thankyou

sorry again about the long post /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bow.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ok after doing some converting It seems like you have a 27 gallon (102.2 liters) setup according to your dimensions. You should just purchase a 10 gallon(37.85 liters) or a 20 gallon (75.7 liters) with a small back pack refugium. That would be your best bet!

Cheers KillBill,

I did think about doing that, however I wanted to have it as all one tank, not only for aesthtics, but also to make working in the fuge easier, and make it a bit more of a feature.

I would probably only have a pair of clowns, a few inverts, do you think a skimmer would be necessary?

Yes you should still use a skimmer.
