I am going to be getting a 24g nano cube and I wan to start a mini reef but I dont know where to start. Well all I know is to get live sand and some live rock. But how long should I let it cycle. I have never done this before. Well kinda but I only have a fish only tank with some live rock. So any suggestions.

Get your sand in then get most if not all the rock you want and arrange it the way you like and get your lights set up. The tank will take a month plus or minus a few days to cycle, during that time you will need to keep the lights on whatever photo period you have in mind to see if you will have any issues with heat, if you do get too warm (above 81-82) you can use that time to work on getting the heat under control. Once it is cycled (and tests ok) you can slowly add either fish or some coral to the tank and go from there. Keep in mind that you will have to let the tank build up bacteria to deal with the added waste from the fish each time you add a fish or two. With a small tank you need to go slow, if you get anything out of whack and over or under correct it you will have a hard time getting it back in check without loosing some fish or coral. Good luck.

I know that this is an old thread but I just started a 12gal the other day. My brother swears by these things and uses his for corals only. He has had a lot of luck with his and loves it so I got one. He had some interesting ways of doing things, he took out all but one sponge, left the bio balls and ceramic rings in, installed a bigger pump and Y outlet, and only does a water change once a month. His corals are growing like crazy and look great! He recommended a web site to me www.nanotuners.com and www.nanocustoms.com. Both sites have some pretty crazy stuff and ideas when it comes to these little reefs, and I mean really crazy when I say crazy. Check it out!

The smallest reef tank I’ve done was 29g and it was enough work that I decided to put all the stuff from that tank in my 75 and turn the 29g into a sump for my 75.

Yeah I thought that this would be an interesting little project. I'm finding that its even hard to get the salinity dialed in just right.

Ya I can imagine, it was bad enough with a 29. Good luck
