I am building my own sump out of a 29G aquarium. This is a first for me as I have always bought everything. I have been out of the aquarium world for about 8 years and want to ensure I am doing this right. I came up with two designs. One is based off my old sump, the other is something I just thought of. The aquarium is an Oceanic 135G reef tank with dual corner boxes. The sump will sit in the stand below the aquarium. Which one would you go with?

What kind of a tank are you planning? reef or a fish only. Are you planning on using internal or external pumps?

I don’t plan on having a reef tank right away. As time goes on, I am sure I will add a few corals here and there. Therefore, I must set up the tank as a reef tank. I thought about creating a refuge tank, but I don’t know anything about them. I may go to that sometime down the road. I plan to have a few pumps inside the tank to aid in water flow. I will purchase a good pump for the sump. Any suggestions on a good brand? I currently have three Rio 2500's from my old days, but I don't want to use that for the sump return.

Pump selection all depends on if you want to have external or internal return pump(s) If you want an internal pump(s) I have had real good luck with Mag Drive pumps and if you want an external I love the Iwaki brand, I have had nothing but good luck with them.
