When should I change the prefilter in my RO unit? I made about 175 Gallons of water and the prefilter is filthy. I flush the unit every other day, but I am wondering when I need to change the prefilter...and all the others as well.

Thanks!!!

I change all 3 cartridges, sediment, carbon and DI every 3 months.

How long can you keep the water in a pail? Do you run a pump to circulate and airate it also?

As long as it is sealed with a lid and it is in a dark spot you should be able to store it for quite a while. I personally only make up what I am going to use in about a weeks time.

What should the reading be on a TDS probe/monitor? What happens if its too low or too high?

I do not use one.

I assume you're talking about the sediment filter? The rule of thumb on those is every six months. Really depends upon the quality of your water, the pore size of the filter (expressed in microns), and the amount of water you run through it.

If you're talking about the carbon block filter, check the chlorine capacity on the filter. Commonly available carbon block filters range from just a few thousand gallons chlorine capacity to 20,000+ gallons.

TDS meters measure Total Dissolved Solids in the water. So with a typical system, your tap water might measure 250 part per million TDS. After going through the sediment and carbon block, you'll find the TDS unchanged. After the RO membrane, you'll find a 90%+ reduction in the TDS. The TDS after the DI resin wouls be down around 0 or 1.
