The Derasa Giant Clam normally reaches a length of about 20 inches (50 centimeters), and the hinge usually covers more than half of the length of the shell. The shell is fairly plain and heavy, with rounded flutes on the upper edge, which help the shell to close very snugly. The mantle of the Derasa Giant Clam covers more of the shell than does the mantle of the Gigas Giant Clam. This trait may be used to distinguish between the two species, as can the mantle's coloration. Derasa Giant Clams normally show wavy striped patterns or spots. They may be found in black, white, blue, yellow, and orange color combinations, but most mantles have a golden hue. Some have bright green or blue lines. Color may vary depending on the clam's location. Tentacles are visible on the intake siphon of the Derasa Giant Clam. As the Derasa Giant Clam ages, it loses its byssal gland. This is the gland that secretes a substance that allows the clam to attach itself to some underwater surface. Larger specimens are heavy enough to anchor themselves without the use of the byssal gland.
