Description:
|
The Maxima Clam is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Blue, purple, gray, brown, and yellow are commonly seen on the mantles of Maxima Clams, which may be decorated with spots, stripes, or blotches. However, patches of solid color are more characteristic than multi-colored patterns. Some Maxima Clams have black eye spots that decorate the edge of the mantle. Others, particularly Maxima Clams from the Red Sea, are a lovely blue color. Shells of Maxima Clams are usually about three times as long as they are wide, and are usually asymmetrical. The hinge is quite short, and normally low scutes are present, crowded closely together. Fine tentacles cover the Maxima Clam's intake siphon, and tubercles may be present over the mantle. By the time it reaches maturity, the Maxima Clam measures 14 to 16 inches (35 to 40 centimeters); however, an average mature length is about 12 inches (30 centimeters).
Maxima Clams are one of the most commonly found Giant Clams. They are spread throughout the Indo Pacific and are found in the Red Sea and the eastern coast of Africa. In the west, they range through the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia. Although most Maxima Clams are often wild caught, increasing efforts at propagation are making some captive bred specimens available.
