Characters: Colonies have thick sturdy branches which are circular in cross section and form clumps that may be several metres across. Branches slightly taper and have a single dome-shaped axial corallite. Radial corallites are small and immersed. The coenosteum is smooth.
Colour: Dark brown with white branch ends.
Similar species: Acropora togianensis, which is almost indistinguishable underwater but which has less compact branches and has coenosteum tuberculae. See also A. brueggemanni.
Habitat: Shallow water, especially exposed upper reef slopes and flats.
Abundance: Common in Papua New Guinea, uncommon elsewhere.
